Whale Watches & Islands Tours
Campobello Island offers some of the best whale watching in the area. Captain Riddle, who mans the miniature lighthouse on Friar's Bay at the bottom of our property, runs whale watches from the Welshpool dock. Not interested in whales? Captain Riddle can give you a personal tour of the islands! See fishing weirs, salmon farms, lighthouses, old harbours, and lots of wildlife such as seals and bald eagles.
Island Ferries
East Coast Ferries goes from Campobello to Deer Island. Deer Island has restaurants, shops and some good painting spots. From Deer Island, you can take another ferry to Eastport, Maine, where there are evenmore restaurants, shops and painting spots. Also from Deer Island, you can take a free Provincial ferry to the Canadian mainland. From Black's Harbour on the mainland, you can take a ferry to the island of Grand Manan. You can even take a ferry from St John to Nova Scotia! (Wherever you end up, just make sure to come back!)
St. Andrews by Water
St. Andrews, New Brunswick, just 30 minutes by boat, offers much in the way of dining, shopping, gardens and art. Captain Riddle can take you there by boat, and once you're there, everything's in walking distance, so you won't need a car. The good captain will come back and pick you up, or if his schedule fits, he might wait for you in St Andrews! (Make sure you visit the historic Algonquin Hotel and the Kingsbrae Gardens.)
Sea Kayaking
Seascape Kayak Tours on Deer Island specializes in small group, low-impact and ecologically sensitive tours of the Bay of Fundy. They also run kayaks in Costa Rica!
Beach walks
So much of Downeast Maine's coast consists of rugged cliffs -- the "Bold Coast," as some call it. But if you're looking for something a little more low-key, try some of the areas sandy or cobble beaches. There are great beach walks on Campobello at Racoon Beach, Herring Cove and Friar's Bay. Across the bridge in Lubec, try Mowry Beach or the Sandbar.
Hiking
Two parks on Campobello offer a great deal of hiking. Both the Herring Cove Provincial Park and the Roosevelt-Campobello International Park have large trail systems. These take you both along the water, where you may look down from high cliffs or clamber down to the cobblestone beaches, and through the island interior, where you can see bogs and swamps, fir and birch forests. Across the bridge, in Maine, is the Cobscook Bay Trail system, with a variety of excellent trails throughout Washington County near the Bay.
Lighthouses
What's a trip to the Maritimes without lighthouses? We have many here, and some you can walk right up to, and one you can even take a tour of! The West Quoddy Lighthouse in West Quoddy State Park, Lubec, has a small museum and you can tour the lighthouse. East Quoddy (the locals call it the Head Harbour Light) can only be reached at low tide, but once you cross over to it, you have many buildings to explore. The Muholland Lighthouse, part of the Roosevelt Campobello International Park overlooks Lubec Channel to Lubec. Other lighthouses, such as the Lubec "Sparkplug" are inaccessible save by boat, but you can get great views of them from land.
Tours of Lubec and Cobscook offers a variety of expeditions for the visitor. Historic tours, birds and wildlife tours, bog walk tours, intertidal tours, lighthouse tours and art tours are just a few of their activities. You might also check into Pathfinders, the local group of walkers and hikers who do a hike every Sunday afternoon at a different spot. |
