About the Workshop

Dawson at North Harbour WharfA mentoring workshop is a different experience from a typical painting workshop. There will be no demonstrations or lectures or personal help at your easel. Instead, you will paint along with Doug as a colleague or, if you prefer, watch as Doug paints. As your mentor, Doug will critique work and talk informally about painting. You can expect a very intense, "immersion" experience in some of the world's most scenic locations.

The workshop will be based in Lubec, Maine, at Crow Town Studio. Students will paint en plein air in Lubec and, just minutes across the Roosevelt Memorial Bridge, on Campobello Island in New Brunswick. Lubec is a quaint, historic fishing village with a scenic waterfront, and Campobello Island is home to the many natural areas of Roosevelt-Campobello International Park and Herring Cove Provincial Park. Expect real working wharves, picturesque buildings and lighthouses, fishing boats, rugged cliffs and peaceful beaches.

Medium: Pastel, though students may choose to paint in oil if they wish. (Doug will be painting in pastel only.)

Student Level: Intermediate to Advanced / Professional. Students must be familiar with the medium and have prior outdoor painting experience. Students must be capable of painting on their own and without assistance from an instructor.

Class Size: Limited to 8 students.

We will be based in the US, but we will cross into Canada to paint. The Lubec-Campobello crossing is one of the least busy. To expedite your crossing, you will need appropriate identification. A passport is NOT required at this time. You will need a government-issued photo ID such as a driver's license plus a copy of your birth certificate. Visit travel.state.gov for the latest updates on crossings into the US and www.cbsa.gc.ca for crossing into Canada.
