Where
to Stay
Lubec
(Maine) and Campobello Island (New Brunswick, Canada) have
many lodging options. Although the workshop will be based
in Lubec, we will most likely paint on both sides of the border.
Keep in mind that we will meet each morning in Lubec first.
Two
websites give many options for lodging. These are: www.visitlubecmaine.com
and www.campobello.com.
You will find motels, B&Bs, campgrounds and even cottages
and houses for rent. If you are looking for a specific
kind of lodging, please ask us and we'll help you.

How
to Get to Lubec, Maine
The
closest airport is Bangor, ME. Bangor is 2 1/2 hours by auto from
Lubec. (Other options are the Bar Harbor airport in Trenton,
also 2 1/2 hours away; and Portland, ME, about 4 hours away.)
When you head out for Lubec (see "By Auto" below),
you have two choices for a route. The quickest and least trafficky
is the interior route: Rte 9 to Wesley, then Rte 192 to Machias
and then Rte 189 to Lubec. The coastal route, Rte 1, is scenic
but extremely busy during high tourist season (July 4th through
Labor Day), especially around Ellsworth.
For
students coming from mainland New Brunswick, there are two
ferries that will shorten your drive. From Letete, NB (near
St George), a free provincial ferry will take you to Deer
Island. From Deer Island, a second ferry (for a fee) will
take you to Campobello Island. From the Campobello ferry landing,
Lubec is about 5 minutes away. The US Border and Customs are
on the bridge that connect the island to Lubec. For ferry
information, see www.deerisland.nb.ca/ferries.htm.
Do
you need a car? Yes. Exploring on your own after our painting
sessions will be a major part of your stay, so we recommend
that you judge your needs accordingly.

What
to Expect
The "Quoddy area" is uncrowded, quiet
and beautiful. (Which is why we live here!) Besides lodging,
the area has restaurants, a pharmacy, a small grocery store
and gift shops, gas stations, an IGA grocery store, hardware
store, etc. (We should mention
Bayside Chocolates in Lubec. You'll want to put this on your
"must visit" list.) Lubec also has a medical center.
With
several parks nearby -- the Roosevelt-Campobello International
Park, the Herring Cove Provincial Park and Maine State Parks
such as West Quoddy Head -- and also the Cobscook Bay Trails
system, there's plenty of hiking and biking. There's also
whale watching tours and deep-sea fishing, art galleries and
gift shops. The Summer Keys program in Lubec sponsors a free
weekly concert where you can hear world-class performers.
(See www.summerkeys.com.)
And don't forget that we have plenty of fresh local seafood!

Studio Location
The workshop "base camp" will be at Crow Town Studio. The studio is on the South Lubec Road in Lubec. To get there from the Lubec-Campobello bridge (where US Customs and US Post Office are):
- Go WEST on Washington Street (away from the bridge) for 0.2 miles to the intersection with Main Street (by the IGA).
- Continue WEST on Main Street for 0.8 miles until you see the left turn for South Lubec Road (some maps mark it as Boot Cove Road.) This is also the turn for the West Quoddy Head Lighthouse.
- Turn LEFT on the South Lubec Road.
- Go 2.0 miles. On your left you will see Bar Road. Just past Bar Road on your left will be a two-story renovated general store. It has natural wood siding and dark blue trim. Park either in front of the studio or right across the road. Studio has a big sign saying "Crow Town Studio".

What
to Bring
September
is a great month to be in the Quoddy region. Typically, the
month is warm and pleasant. Still, be prepared for the occasional
day of rain and cool weather. Although we won't paint in the
rain, for your own comfort bring a raincoat and warm layers
to dress in. We have a mosquito or two, so bring insect repellent
if the little critters bother you.
We
will paint in both Canada and in Maine, so you will be crossing
the border. The Lubec-Campobello crossing is one of the least
busy. To expedite your crossing, you will need appropriate
identification. Visit
travel.state.gov
for the latest updates on crossings into the US and www.cbsa.gc.ca
for crossing into Canada. A passport is NOT required. You will, however, need a government-issued photo ID such as a driver's license plus a copy of your birth certificate. A passport, though not required, makes things easier.
You will want to make sure you bring all the art supplies you need. There are no well-stocked art supply stores within a day's drive. However, there is a frame shop about an hour away that stocks some supplies. They will try to stock some of the items on the supply list. But do not count on them having everything! If you are planning to buy from them, call to see what they have. They will also special order for you. For more information, contact Woodwind Custom Framers & Gallery and tell them you are taking an art workshop with us and let them know what you need. (They are US 1, the road between Bangor to Lubec.) To contact them:
