Is This Workshop for Me?

A mentoring workshop is a different experience from a typical painting workshop. There will be no demonstrations or lectures or personal help at your easel. Instead, you will paint along with Doug as a colleague or, if you prefer, watch as Doug paints. As your mentor, Doug will critique work and talk informally about painting. You can expect a very intense, "immersion" experience in some of the world's most scenic locations.

This is a plein air, pastel landscape workshop. Tthough students may choose to paint in oil if they wish, Doug will be painting in pastel only.

Students must be familiar with the medium and have prior outdoor painting experience. Students must be capable of painting on their own and without assistance from an instructor.

Where to Stay

For this workshop, we have arranged to reserve a block of six rooms at The Wharf in Lubec. The Wharf is an elegantly renovated 100-year-old sardine factory. All rooms are on the ocean with large windows. Suites share a common room with a kitchen, dining and sitting areas and laundry. Each suite has a private bath and includes breakfast. Prices are $100 daily or $550 weekly (plus tax) with a $150 non-refundable deposit due by May 1st. (Full payment plus tax is due by June 16.) For more information, visit www.theinnatthewharf.com or call 207-733-4400.

Although we encourage you to stay at The Wharf, there are other options for lodging. Two websites list them: www.visitlubecmaine.com and www.campobello.com.

How to Get to Lubec, Maine

The closest airport is Bangor, ME. Bangor is 2 1/2 hours by auto from Lubec. (Other options are the Bar Harbor airport in Trenton, also 2 1/2 hours away; and Portland, ME, about 4 hours away.) When you head out for Lubec (see "By Auto" below), you have two choices for a route. The quickest and least trafficky is the interior route: Rte 9 to Wesley, then Rte 192 to Machias and then Rte 189 to Lubec. The coastal route, Rte 1, is scenic but extremely busy during high tourist season (July 4th through Labor Day), especially around Ellsworth.

For students coming from mainland New Brunswick, there are two ferries that will shorten your drive. From L'Etete, NB (near St George), a free provincial ferry will take you to Deer Island. From Deer Island, a second ferry (for a fee) will take you to Campobello Island. From the Campobello ferry landing, Lubec is about 5 minutes away. The US Border and Customs are on the bridge that connect the island to Lubec. For ferry information, see www.deerisland.nb.ca/ferries.htm.

Do you need a car? Yes. Exploring on your own after our painting sessions will be a major part of your stay, so we recommend that you judge your needs accordingly.

What to Expect

The "Quoddy area" is uncrowded, quiet and beautiful. (Which is why we live here!) Besides lodging, the area has restaurants, a pharmacy, a small grocery store and gift shops, gas stations, an IGA grocery store, hardware store, etc. (We should mention Bayside Chocolates and Monica's Chocolate in Lubec. You'll want to put these on your "must visit" list.) Lubec also has a medical center.

With several parks nearby -- the Roosevelt-Campobello International Park, the Herring Cove Provincial Park and Maine State Parks such as West Quoddy Head -- and also the Cobscook Bay Trails system, there's plenty of hiking and biking. There's also whale watching tours and deep-sea fishing, art galleries and gift shops. The Summer Keys program in Lubec sponsors a free weekly concert where you can hear world-class performers. (See www.summerkeys.com.) And don't forget that we have plenty of fresh local seafood!

Studio Location

We'll meet mornings at The Wharf, and then if we need studio space due to inclement weather, we will paint there in the afternoons. (The Wharf is the suggested lodging, as mentioned above.)

What to Bring

August is a great month to be in the Quoddy region. Typically, the month is warm and pleasant. Still, be prepared for the occasional day of rain and cool weather. Although we won't paint in the rain, for your own comfort bring a raincoat and warm layers to dress in. We have a mosquito or two, so bring insect repellent if the little critters bother you.

We may paint in both Canada and in Maine, so you may be crossing the border. The Lubec-Campobello crossing is one of the least busy. You will need appropriate identification to return to the U.S. For travel information, visit www.getyouhome.gov or www.travel.state.gov.

You will want to make sure you bring all the art supplies you need. There are no well-stocked art supply stores within a day's drive. However, there is a frame shop about an hour away that stocks some supplies. They will try to stock some of the items on the supply list. But do not count on them having everything! If you are planning to buy from them, call to see what they have. They will also special order for you. For more information, contact Woodwind Custom Framers & Gallery and tell them you are taking an art workshop with us and let them know what you need. (They are US 1, the road between Bangor to Lubec.) To contact them:
