In each workshop, Michael demonstrates a variety of materials and techniques, explores methods for abstracting the landscape, and shows how to use intuitive, expressive color. He'll focus on fundamentals for painting en plein air -- how to begin a plein air painting, how to proceed and how to finish. Each day starts with a lecture/demo, followed by plenty of time for student work. Michael gives personal attention at the easel, complete with helpful tips and suggestions. Each day will end with a critique. In the event of bad weather, students will paint in the studio. (Note: Some workshops have a different format, such as the mentoring workshops, and are so described.)

June 15-20, 2008: This weeklong plein air workshop takes us to Grand Manan Island, the "Queen of the Fundy Isles." The workshop is modelled after Michael's popular half-day Campobello workshops, where the student receives instruction for a half day and is free to explore (or paint!) the other half. 2008: Join Michael at his studio gallery on Campobello Island, New Brunswick, for en plein air (outdoor) painting workshops. Both oil and pastel are welcome. Every week is a complete workshop, so you can pick what week works best for you. Workshops are half-days only. Learn and paint half the day and then explore the Island the other half! Unlike the regular workshops, there will be no lectures or demonstrations. However, Michael will offer plenty of critiques and "art talk" and the opportunity to paint with him in some very scenic locations on Campobello Island and in and around Lubec, Maine. This particular workshop will focus on painting in a large format (16x20 or so). 5 half days. Oil & Pastel (Michael will work in oil only this week.) This year will be a bit different - it'll be a mentoring program, consisting of five HALF-days. Unlike the regular workshops, there will be no lectures or demonstrations.
