2008: Michael's fourth year teaching this popular, weeklong studio/plein-air landscape workshop along the stunning coast of Maine at Acadia National Park. This year will be a bit different - it'll be a mentoring program, consisting of five HALF-days. Unlike the regular workshops, in this mentoring workshop you'll be expected to paint in the field without assistance. However, you'll be painting right alongside Michael, and he'll offer plenty of mini-demonstrations, critiques and "art talk, " as well as the opportunity to enjoy some very scenic locations. 5 half days. January-March, 2009: Join Michael in Sedona for weeklong plein air workshops, based on the same format as his successful Campobello Island ones. These will be mentoring workshops. You must have prior plein air experience and be comfortable painting outdoors. Suggested for Intermediate to Advanced and Professional artists. Unlike the regular workshops, in these mentoring workshops you'll be expected to paint in the field without assistance. However, you'll be painting right alongside Michael, and he'll offer plenty of mini-demonstrations, critiques and "art talk, " as well as the opportunity to enjoy some very scenic locations. The workshop will be very small with no more than 4 students. Like the Campbello Island workshops, these are half-days only. January 31, 2009: Michael brings his one-day Introduction to Pastel workshop to Sedona. If you've never painted in pastel before, this is the day for you! Michael will demonstrate and help you explore the wonders of pastel in this hands-on class. March 23-27, 2009: Join Michael in "Red Rock Country" for a week of pastel painting beautiful Sedona in the early spring. Michael has painted extensively in the area as an Invited Artist for the annual Sedona Plein Air Festival, and he'll show you some of his secret spots. 5 full days. Pastel only. April 1-4 , 2009: Join Michael for a 4-day studio/plein-air landscape workshop in the beautiful desert Southwest in Spring! Michael will demonstrate a variety of materials and techniques, explores methods for abstracting the landscape, and show how to use intuitive, expressive color. Each day will start with a lecture/demo, followed by plenty of time for student work. Michael gives personal attention at the easel, complete with helpful tips and suggestions. Price: TBA Contact: TBA In each plein air workshop, Michael will focus on fundamentals for painting outdoors - how to begin, how to proceed and how to finish. The workshop will include demonstrations, plenty of time for student work plus group critiques. Michael gives personal attention at the easel, complete with helpful tips and suggestions. In the event of bad weather, students will paint in the studio. Please note that the Campobello Island workshops each have a focus. These workshops have been planned to take best advantage of weather and tides for certain subjects. (We will not, however, limit work to just these subjects!) Also, some workshops are for different levels and media, and some include indoor work. Please read the descriptions carefully before you sign up. Students must provide their own supplies; a supply list will be sent upon receipt of deposit. Please make sure you have everything you need, as there are no art supply stores on or near Campobello Island. Other workshop locations may have art supply stores nearby, but please check before traveling. For those flying to oil painting workshops, don't worry about bringing odorless mineral spirits, as we will have some available for purchase. If you are signing up for a plein air workshop, you must have prior painting experience. This doesn't mean you can't be a beginner! Serious beginners are more than welcome. It just means that you must be reasonably comfortable with handling brushes and paint or pastels. If you have never painted before or don't feel capable, do yourself a favor and take an introductory class and practice with your materials. Painting outdoors can be difficult enough without also having to learn painting basics! Also, if you've just bought a brand-new field easel, please practice setting it up before coming to the workshop. If you are signing up for a workshop marked "Mentoring - Int-Adv," you must be able to work in the field without assistance. For more on mentoring, please read this FAQ.
