July-September ,
2009: Focus Workshops
Campobello
Island, New Brunswick back
to top
Join
Michael at his studio gallery on Campobello Island, New Brunswick,
for en plein air workshops. Both oil and pastel are welcome. Please note that each workshop focusses on a theme to take advantage of weather and tides for certain subjects. Although the focus will be on a particular theme, we will not limit ourselves to that, so we most definitely will paint other subject matter! Workshops are half-days only. Paint
half the day and then explore the Island the other half! 5 half days. Oil & Pastel.
Small workshop size! Typically no more than 4 students. Take advantage of the opportunity to enjoy a small workshop - it's rare in the world of art workshops!
For
much more information on the program, please
Here is a list of specific dates and the focus for each:
- June 29-July 3: Sketching. We'll do several small, full-color sketches (5x7 or so) at each location. This is a great way to gather reference material for larger paintings.
- July 6-10: Boats. Boats have always attracted the painter, and we'll paint the several different kinds of boats we see at our wharves and harbors.
- July 13-17: Rocks & Beaches. This is a week of low tide in the morning, which makes for a perfect opportunity to get up-close to the rocky cliffs and broad beaches and clam flats.
- July 20-24: Water. Stymied by reflections and the changeable nature of water? This is the workshop for you! Scheduled for high tides in the mornings, we're guaranteed to have lots of water!
- July 27-31: Lighthouses. Lighthouses - cliche or a suitable subject? We'll learn how to paint lighthouses without painting a cliche.
- August 3-7: Boats. A repeat of July 6-10.
- August 24-28: Rocks & Beaches. A repeat of July 13-17.
- August 31-Sept 4: Limited Palettes. All too often, we get mired down in a too-bountiful palette. Learn how to paint with just a handful of pastels or four oil colors - and to still capture the entire rainbow.

Important Notes
In each plein air workshop, Michael will focus on fundamentals for painting outdoors -
how to begin, how to proceed
and how to finish. The workshop will include demonstrations, plenty of time for student
work plus group critiques. Michael gives personal attention at the easel, complete
with helpful tips and suggestions. In the event of bad weather, students will paint in the studio.
Please note that the Campobello Island workshops each have a focus. These workshops have been planned to take best advantage of weather and tides for certain subjects. (We will not, however, limit work to just these subjects!) Also, some workshops are for different levels and media, and some include indoor work. Please read the descriptions carefully before you sign up.
Students must provide their own supplies; a supply list will be sent upon receipt of deposit. Please make sure you have everything you need, as there are no art supply stores on or near Campobello Island. Other workshop locations may have art supply stores nearby, but please check before traveling. For those flying to oil painting workshops, don't worry about bringing odorless mineral spirits, as we will have some available for purchase.
If you are signing up for a plein air workshop, you must have prior painting experience. This doesn't mean you can't be a beginner! Serious beginners are more than welcome. It just means that you must be reasonably comfortable with handling brushes and paint or pastels. If you have never painted before or don't feel capable, do yourself a favor and take an introductory class and practice with your materials. Painting outdoors can be difficult enough without also having to learn painting basics! Also, if you've just bought a brand-new field easel, please practice setting it up before coming to the workshop.
If you are signing up for a workshop marked "Mentoring - Int-Adv," you must be able to work in the field without assistance. For more on mentoring,
please read this FAQ.
